Click To Tweet So when I got Sony’s invite to check out their new Home Cinema projector I was curious to see whether they could retain 4K HDR image quality over such a large surface area. It’s a quality that annoys friends and family, but serves me well as a film producer. Combined with a specialized screen designed to only accept light coming from below, as demonstrated in Sony’s booth at the Consumer Electronics Show, you get a massive picture that’s bright enough for most rooms.I’m a really picky bastard where it comes to audiovisual displays. One is sheer light output: its laser light engine puts out 2500 lumens, very respectable for any projector. One downside with projectors is that the image washes out in bright light, but the VZ1000ES has a couple of fixes for that. Of course the price is well beyond most people’s budgets, but it still represents a cool concept and a different take on traditional TVs and projectors. It can blend seamlessly into a cabinet and the whole system can disappear entirely if you spring for a motorized screen. It’s a short-throw projector, meaning it can sit within inches of the wall and still project a huge image (you could get up to 120 inches or more if you wanted). It’s not exactly a TV, but it comes close enough. It’s available for preorder now and ships in April. Another is the VPL-VZ1000ES, a relative bargain at $25,000.

One is the XBR-100Z9D, a 100-inch LCD TV that costs a cool $60,000 if you can find one. Sony has a couple of solutions for rich buyers who want a TV that big. Certainly you can watch under low light to near pitch black conditions, like other home theater projectors in a home theater, but it’s designed to work in most rooms. Sure you can place this projector in a dedicated theater. Being ultra short throw, it redefines where projectors can be used at home. Yes he VPL-VZ1000ES is a home theater projector! But it’s really not limited to a home theater and that’s very important!. This may be the projector everyone will be dying to own, but with a $24,999 list price, it won’t fit everyone’s budget (for sure)! Important to note, although the VPL-VZ1000ES isn’t shipping yet, Sony dealers are now taking orders. Sony has previously launched two of commercial models, this one’s for your home. The Sony VZ1000ES laser projector is not the first ultra short throw true 4K projector, but it is the first designed for the home.
